We enter two rooms in no orders, one is black&white, tidy silent empty, even has no signs of living things; the other is filled with color, tidy silent empty, even has no signs of living things.
When the normal daily scenes are deliberately separated apart from daily life, the scene that we thought to be familiar with becomes to be so strange, we used to see them as life backgrounds, usually invisible, till now it owns spirit, its has staring eyes, in-hiding heart, even unsettled emotions. It attracts you, deeply.
WEN YIPEI and XIAO XIAO, they both are young artists born in 80s, and they both chose the silentest space to create their scenes. As in my opinion, they seem to put themselves in front of a mirror, to watch, to survey, to think, to discover. In fact, they are reflecting to themselves, they are to discover themselves, they create the mirroring of their inner through their creative work.
Wen always paints in satiate and smooth color, in the meantime, the color cuts the space with no intention, makes the pure scene full of mystery. The crossed hiding and covering of the structures structure a little world of twists and peaces, where warm elegant rhythm is floating through to decorate. But it’s it true or not? We seem neither to confirm nor to deny. “It seems very attracting”, is this paradox to real life?
Xiao’s eyesight always catches the cold back&white, however. His shots stare at the simplest corner of the room, and then crosses this limited space through the window to reach to the much wider outside space, both inside and outside are exposed on purposes, but when we try to catch the interface of the inside and the outside we get lost with our seeing eyes. In the this two-dimension space, distance and transparency, subjectivity and objectives, their connected and opposite relation are clearly to be understood. To get in or to to get out? It’s a question.
Even the most normal thing will motivate extraordinary sites, all that you are related to would reflect back to yourselves. To distant is to understand. Standing in front of works of these two artists, looking into their silence, entanglement and exploration, trying to touch the untouchable world beyond the pictures, I also left sign of me in their mirrors.
This is the very first exhibition of 5art after last removal, in this new gallery they both show their very own distinguished personal inner space. You can’t deny this is one interesting conversation.
